Donald Trump's so-called "big beautiful bill" is getting closer and closer to becoming reality, despite controversy over tax cuts for high earners, risks to food assistance and health coverage, an addition of trillions to the country's debt, and a clause that would ban states from regulating AI.

In the Last Week Tonight video above, John Oliver goes through all these things and more before giving the following, damning summary.

"Right now Republicans are trying to rush this bill through, because they know how toxic it is," he says. "It may have even passed the Senate by the time you're watching this. And while I know there is a lot going on right now it is worth paying attention to this bill, because if it becomes law we're going to be looking back on it decades from now the same way we look back on all the destructive shit Reagan did. And when that happens, Republicans cannot say they didn't know what was in it, or what it would do. Everyone who votes for this should be held accountable."
