Threads, It looks like Instagram's Twitter alternative, is catching up to X in daily users, a new report reveals.

There were 115.1 million daily active users on the platforms' iOS and Android apps in June 2025, according to data from market intelligence provider Similarweb reported by TechCrunch. In comparison, X reached 132 million daily active users during the same time period, the data showed, and Bluesky reached 4.1 million daily active users.

It's important to note that this data is exclusively for mobile users, and X likely has an edge with regards to desktop users. Similarweb reports X had 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide in June while Threads and Bluesky had 6.9 million and 5.3 million, respectively.

This didn't come out of nowhere. People began looking for Twitter alternatives when when Elon Musk bought the platform in 2023, renamed it X, revamped its verification protocol, got rid of Circles, and integrated xAI's Grok chatbot, among other questionable decisions. Users fled to Mastodon, Bluesky, and, of course, Threads.

But unlike other alternatives, Threads had a bit of a leg up when it came to attracting users from the start — the app's ecosystem was created with the help of Instagram, so users had a built-in community, and creating an account was simple.

Plus, it was released around the time a whole host of Twitter clones were popping up in response to Elon Musk buying the platform and turning it into X. So when Threads said they had 90 million signups in the first four days it existed, it wasn't terribly difficult to understand why. But that 90 million didn't touch the hundreds of millions of accounts on X at the time.
